Follow the information, not just the line
Ants may be looking for food, water, or a nesting opportunity. Note the room and the point where they become visible. Check whether activity is associated with a spill, pet food, a plant, or a damp area. You do not need to pull out appliances or disturb a nest to gather a helpful description.
- Where does the trail first appear inside?
- Are ants concentrated around a particular item?
- Does activity recur at the same place?
- Are similar ants visible just outside an accessible doorway or window?
Make practical changes around the activity
Store food in closed containers, clean crumbs and sticky spills, and address known leaks. A visible gap around a door or pipe may also be relevant. Wiping an ant trail with soapy water can remove the scent trail, but it does not identify or resolve the underlying colony.
Keep a note of where the trail was before cleaning. That lets you share the pattern even if no ants are visible when you contact AML.
Why the species matters
Different ants have different nesting habits, food preferences, and responses to control. NPIC advises identifying the pest before choosing a product; even one kind of ant may call for a different approach than another.
Alabama Extension also emphasizes confirmation when an unusual ant problem is suspected. Large numbers or unusual movement are details to report, not enough to name the species. Avoid drawing conclusions from color alone.
Know when to ask for help
Repeated activity, uncertain identification, or a suspected nest in an inaccessible area are good reasons to seek advice. Tell AML what you have seen and anything already applied. Ask whether the specific ant concern can be addressed through the service offered.
If you have photos, save an overview of the trail as well as any clear close-up; the location can be as useful as the insect's appearance. Keep notes about anything you have already changed or cleaned so the sequence of events is clear.
